On June 5, 2012, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced Retrofit Chicago's Commercial Buildings Initiative, a voluntary program to accelerate energy efficiency in large commercial buildings across the city.

Commercial Buildings Initiative participants are taking action to reduce energy usage by at least 20% in the next five years, sharing progress and efficiency successes with the public, and serving as ambassadors to other buildings that are interested in increasing their energy efficiency.

At the time of launch, the Commercial Buildings Initiative spanned 14 million square feet of office and hospitality space and brought together the necessary players and tools: building owners and managers, technical experts, design and engineering professionals, policy entrepreneurs, access to financing and peer-to-peer consultation opportunities to create case studies and models that can be followed by other building owners and operators.   The initiative‚Äôs focus on large structures that are over 200,000 square feet will help to secure savings from the buildings with the greatest potential for energy use reduction.

For their third annual spring seminar, The Chicago Committee on High Rise Buildings is organizing this series of presentations to help update professional design architects and engineers, building owners, managers, operating engineers and others as to what exactly the Commercial Buildings Initiative entails, how it will and can be monitored, what impacts it will have on codes and how current codes will challenge the City of Chicago to become the most sustainable city in the world.
A round table discussion of Building Owners and managers currently enrolled in the Commercial Buildings will end the session, allowing those participating in this program to give their insights and thoughts on the process to date.
Presentations will be by individuals with exceptional knowledge of these issues, and will be available to respond to questions from seminar attendees
