Session Descriptions:

Session 1 - 11/28  - LEED for Neighborhood Development: Sustainability Beyond Building: Green Communities: Bringing Smart Growth and New Urbanism into LEED Where communities are built, how communities are designed, and how they ultimately perform has a tremendous impact upon the environment and nearby residents of a neighborhood. Smart Growth and New Urbanism are two leading strategies for sustainable design that complement green design in the new LEED for Neighborhood Development certification system. Learn more about these two planning philosophies and how they can be implemented on the project level.

Session 2 - 12/5 - LEED for Neighborhood Development: Sustainability Beyond Building: Strategies for Urban Infill & Brownfield Redevelopment
USGBC has been testing the strengths and weaknesses of LEED for Neighborhood Development through nearly 240 pilot projects over the course of two years. Hear from two pilot case studies about lessons learned and best practices that have helped inform revisions to the rating system. Presenters will briefly describe the pilot project they have worked on, identify implementation challenges, and review areas where the rating system influences project decision making.

Session 3  - 12/12 - LEED for Neighborhood Development: Sustainability Beyond Building: A Tool to Retrofit the Suburbs
The global economic crisis has shown that the rampant outward growth of most American metropolitan regions is both environmentally and financially unsustainable.  With large retailers going out of business and many suburban jurisdictions looking to alter their zoning codes and encourage more compact development, there are many opportunities to create walkable, urban places in the suburbs. Learn how LEED for Neighborhood Development can be used as an urban design tool in appropriate suburban locations to encourage this type of development through certified pilot case studies.

Session 4 -  12/19 - LEED for Neighborhood Development Credit-by-Credit Review: Getting Started
Now that you have enjoyed learning about the strategies of ND and have explored several case studies, learn how to implement the LEED for Neighborhood Development Rating System during your next project. This session will provide background information on the Rating System, describe key elements and unique features of LEED-ND, identify the stage of certification and timeline for your project, explain the LEED-ND registration and certification process, and determine if LEED-ND is a useful tool for your project.
