The Aldo Leopold Legacy Center is one of the greenest buildings in the United States and contains some of the most groundbreaking sustainable design features ever used in a commercial facility. The 6,208 sq. ft. building received LEED Platinum certification in 2007. The Legacy Center is the first “net zero energy” building in Wisconsin and the first carbon neutral building certified by the USGBC. Serving as a visitor center and headquarters for the Aldo Leopold Foundation in Baraboo, Wisconsin, the project was designed by Kubala Washatko Architects; construction management and LEED consultation were provided by The Boldt Company.

The site includes classrooms, exhibit areas, archives, library space, offices, and more. The facility also features laboratories, workrooms and equipment allowing continued ecological restoration and scientific research pertinent to the development and implementation of Aldo Leopold’s land ethic.

Despite the contrasts of Wisconsin’s four-season climate,

the Leopold Center uses 70 percent less energy than a building built just to code, and the center’s roof-mounted solar array is projected to meet 110 percent of the building’s energy needs on an annual basis.
