(Approved for 1.5 GBCI CE and AIA LU|HSW|SD hours)

Niles West was awarded the Energy Star designation in 2010 by the U.S. EPA and earned LEED EB:O&M Certification in 2011, making it one of the first five schools in the country to achieve that status. Though today’s school covers almost 800,000 square feet, Niles West High School opened in 1958 as a much smaller facility. Over the years, it expanded in response to increasing enrollments. With each addition came a different mechanical system, which presented a variety
of challenges to balance and fine tune the systems for efficiency. Over the past several years Niles West has undertaken a comprehensive program to incorporate the core principles of sustainability into its operations and maintenance. Niles West also earned a Silver LEED for Schools 2.0 rating for its Six-Classroom Addition. Click here to view the Niles West green dashboard.

This event includes an overview of some of the ways Niles West reduced energy use and operating expenses and created a healthier environment for students and faculty. Guests will tour the school to see the LEED certified facilities as well as the award-winning STEM Research Lab, the Six-Classroom Addition, the new Athletic Training Center and the Prairie Outdoor Classroom.

This event is free and open to the public, but please register in advance so we can accurately plan
for the event.
