Join the USGBC-Illinois Chicago Branch for Lighting's Impact on Learning Spaces: Wadsworth Elementary School Case Study.
(Approved for 1.5 GBCI CE and AIA LU|HSW|SD hours)

The Wadsworth Elementary Schools project is a series of three two-story, public elementary schools, ranging in size from 50,000 to 55,000 square feet. Each sits on a site of approximately 11-12 acres. The design and construction of these schools was concurrent and each school had a slightly different footprint. The schools are pursuing LEED Silver certification, including IEQc8.2 Daylight and Views - Views for 90% of Spaces.

dbHMS analyzed lighting strategies through simulations of key spaces in each school. During this lecture, we'll review the daylighting studies completed, which allowed the design team to test the impact of daylighting for key spaces specific to each site. Several studies were completed through Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents to test shading from canopies of varying lengths, shading from vertical louvers, light transmittance with different glazing options, impact of window size changes, glare issues with layout adjustments, and effectiveness of shade cloths. The session will help attendees know which factors to consider in their own design projects, and how to go about maximizing daylight while controlling glare.
