Join the Illinois Green Alliance for Façade Design Using Lifecycle Carbon Analysis

For many years now, architects, engineers, and designers have regularly used building performance modeling to test various Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs). These studies have routinely focused on the reduction of operational energy, which only accounts for one aspect of a building’s carbon emissions.   Excluded from these energy analyses are the impacts of both embodied carbon and a project’s local grid emissions factor.  With the aim of reducing total carbon emissions, this presentation will demonstrate a design approach  for building façades which combines both embodied and operational carbon emissions, thereby basing design choices on total lifecycle carbon emissions.

  • Patrick Keeney, Senior Technical Architect for Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture

  1. Give an overview of Environmental Product Declarations, including the Product Category Rules (PCRs) that govern them, EPD functional units, Environmental Impact Categories, and lifecycle stages.
  2. Utilizing a Curtain Wall system example, demonstrate how to calculate an LCA for a façade, including scope of components, impacts of transportation, and various material benchmarking.
  3. Explain what “shoe box” energy modeling is and how it can be used to evaluate various façade design strategies for operational energy performance.
  4. Demonstrate the impacts that a project’s location and associated energy grid emissions factor has on the lifecycle carbon of a project.

This webinar will be eligible to self-report to USGBC for 1 credit hour towards your LEED professional credential.
