This session will focus on strategies for successful certification of multifamily Passive House/PHIUS projects. Grounded in experience gained from a number of recent projects, we’ll discuss strategies that we’ve seen work, as well as those that have not. We’ll discuss the implications of early design decisions on the complexity of air sealing, as well as the importance of focusing air-sealing efforts, both in the design and construction phases, on the transitions between dissimilar materials. We’ll also review key non-air-sealing related requirements that we often see project teams struggle with including bedroom and kitchen ventilation, HVAC testing and balancing, and hot water design layout and performance testing. Finally, we’ll discuss how critical project team organization and training can be to successful outcomes for multifamily Passive House projects and suggest several concrete organizational steps that project teams can take to increase their chances of successful certification.
