The ComEd funded research study in partnership with Slipstream, LUCHA, Linn-Mathes, EcoAchievers, and PHIUS looks to compare operational performance of two affordable housing 6-unit buildings monitored over the course of 18 months collecting over 20 billion data points. Each of the buildings participated in the ComEd Affordable Housing program, share the same Chicago neighborhood, footprint, and floorplan. One of buildings uses gas heat and was designed to EnergyStar® requirements and the other air source heat pumps meeting PHIUS+ 2015 certification.

While PHIUS maintains a compilation of projects with post-construction data, those case studies focus on total energy consumption. These heavily instrumented buildings provide an in-depth assessment of energy use, heating and cooling loads, indoor air quality, and utility costs. We will cover key findings on each of these topics looking at how building envelope, ventilation strategies, heat pump and furnace characteristics, hot water systems, and occupant behavior factor into overall performance.
