Join Illinois Green, AIA Chicago and IIDA Illinois for the second session in our spring WELL Building series! This month, our presenters and topic will focus on Health, Wellness and Biophilia.

Designing for health and wellness is centered on the experience of the occupant. For many, that means thermal comfort, lighting, and acoustics, but it can be so much more. What truly reduces workplace stress for employees? How do access to food, water, and active design features contribute to human health? What role can corporate policy plan in creating a healthful building?

We will explore how the WELL Building Standard addresses occupant nourishment, fitness, ergonomics and mental health. In addition, we will take a more in-depth look at biophilia, the hypothesis that humans possess an innate tendency to seek connections with nature. What does biophilia design look like? How might it impact the design process? How can biophilia inform a broader approach to sustainable design?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Explore the strategies of health and wellness design implemented by the WELL Building Standard and how it compares to other rating systems
  2. Identify the necessity to consider health and wellness strategies and biophilic elements into projects
  3. Determine the link between issues of health and wellness and how biophilia can help influence positive results
  4. Define biophilia and explore the different attributes that it embodies

Presenters:

  • Carina Clark, IIDA, EDAC, LEED AP BD+C, WELL Faculty, Clark Interiors
  • John Mlade, LFA, WELL Faculty, LEED Fellow, WSP | Built Ecology
